Laughter, Humor, Good Health

Growing up in the 1970’s, we listened to comedy albums on the record player.  And we’re reminded now of a quick joke we heard that went something like this: “I’m not worried about growing senile because if it happens, I won’t know it.”

We thought that was the height of clever, but senility (such a quaint term), dementia, and Altzheimer’s strike terror in just about all of us. It isn’t a laughing matter.

Yet, countless studies demonstrate the connection between laughter, humor, and good health.  While so many aspects of aging can be depressing, frightening, and cruel, laughter is indeed one of the methods we employ to engage the process.

So, in the name of better health, or just a good yuk to brighten the moment, Fit65 takes it upon itself to share what we think is funny when it comes to the process of aging and also the oft times silly nature of exercise itself.  Imagine if the Martians landed and wandered into a health club to witness human behavior.  Surely they would be considerably confused about the seemingly futile nature of repetitive weightlifting or running endlessly in place.

The Senior Years

An older gentleman (mid 80’s) walks into an upscale cocktail lounge.  He is very well dressed, smelling slightly of an expensive aftershave, hair well groomed, great looking suit, flower in his lapel, shoes shined and no walker.  He presents a suave, well-looked-after image.  Seated at the bar is a fine looking lady in her 70’s.

The gentleman walks over, sits alongside her, orders a drink, takes a sip, turns to her and says, “So tell me good-looking, do I come here often?”
